President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday said that if the three political parties— PPP, MQM and ANP— join hands in Karachi, there was no reason why they could not confront and defeat the menace of lawlessness and the targeted killings in the metropolis.

He also directed for setting up a committee comprising of representatives of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awmi National Party (ANP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to have constant liaison with the provincial home minister and the chief minister to remove any misgiving about the operation against the law breakers, extortionists and the target killers in the city.

This he said while chairing a meeting of the allied parties held in Bilawal House here.

At least 14 more people were killed as the law and order situation deteriorated in Karachi on Friday. Some 28 people have been killed in the city during the last three days. Most of the killings on Friday took place in the Orangi Town area, where drive-by shootings claimed seven lives. Attackers on a motorbike killed three people at the Qadhafi Chowk in Orangi Town while four other people were shot dead in separate incidents in the area.

One person was gunned down near the highly-guarded Bilawal House in Clifton. Other areas affected by violence included New Sabzi Mandi, Teen Hati and Gadap.

The only measure the government took was Home Minister Sindh Manzoor Wassan ordering the police to increase patrolling in the affected areas.

The chief justice of the Sindh High Court, while taking notice of the fresh wave of violence, has ordered the chiefs of the Karachi Police and Rangers to brief the court about the efforts being made to curb the recurring instances of violence in the city.

The Karachi stock market ended slightly lower on Thursday as delay in the imposition of capital gains tax (CGT) continued to dampen investor sentiment. The market was bullish during the wee hours of trade as investors went for second-tier stocks, but offloading during later part of the session in energy sector and Engro took the market into the red zone.

The Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) 100-share index declined 8.48 points or 0.06 percent to close at 13,929.47 points as compared to 13,937.95 points of the previous session. The KSE 30-share index was down by 26.27 points to close at 12,179.78 points as compared with 12,206.05 points.

Analysts said that selling in Exploration and Production (E&P) stocks led the market to fall marginally. Concerns loomed over uncertain economic outlook and limited foreign interest as global commodities showed a falling trend.

The market turnover increased 17.75 percent and traded 307.93 million shares after opening at 261.51 million shares. The overall market capitalisation slumped 0.08 percent and traded Rs 3.572 trillion as against Rs 3.575 trillion. Losers outnumbered gainers 166 to 141, while 75 stopcks were unchanged.

“Stocks closed lower in the earnings announcement session at KSE as investors awaited the announcements on the revised CGT regime,” said Arif Habib Investments Ltd Director Ahsan Mehanti. “Stronger corporate earnings in oil and cement sectors invited limited institutional support.”

The KMI 30-share decreased 33.39 points to close at 24,061.12 points from its opening at 24,094.51 points. The KSE all-share index closed with a loss of 7.48 points to 9,794.91 points as against 9,802.39 points.

“Selling in E&P stocks and Engro led the market to fall marginally,” said Topline Sec analyst Samar Iqbal. “Investors are still confused about the timings of the president’s CGT ordinance. Dera Ghazi Khan Cement (DGKC) was in the limelight and closed at its upper limit due to hope of better full year result.”

Similarly, Engro Foods also closed at its upper limit after better-than-expected quarter result, he added.

Three dead bodies were recovered from two different areas of the metropolis here on Monday. Police found the dead bodies of two youngsters, wrapped in a bed sheet and gunny bag near Fazal Kareem Hospital, Korangi within the limits of Korangi Industrial Area police station.
A police official said unidentified men dislodged the bodies from a car in the early hours and fled, adding that both victims had three bullets in their upper torsos as well as torture marks. They were identified as 18-year-old Hafiz Abdul Rehman, son of Abdul Ghafoor and 20-year-old Hafiz Noor Hussain, son of Hussain Ahmed. The bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities. SHO Malik Saleem said both victims were cousins who used to live in Korangi 2½, Sector 48-A. They had been missing since Sunday afternoon. Both were Hafiz-e-Quran and employed in a garments factory. Rehman’s mother Noor Jehan had already submitted an application in Zaman Town police station on Sunday regarding the disappearance of her son and his cousin. SHO Saleem said the motive behind dual murder was yet to be ascertained, however, as per the families’ statements, they had some monetary dispute with someone from within the community. The victims hailed from Bangladesh. Police have registered an FIR (313/12) against unidentified men on the complaint of state and initiated the probe. Separately, 23-year-old Mohammad Subhan, son of Aslam was found dead in his rickshaw parked at Mir Mohammad Baloch Road within the limits of Baghdadi police station. According to police officials, the deceased was a Hazarewal who used to live in Ali Mohammad Mohalla of Lyari. He was shot once in the head and twice in the chest. A police official, however, suspected that the deceased was associated with notorious Jabbar Jhengu Group and might have been killed by the rival party. Body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for postmortem and later handed over to the family. Following the incident, tension prevailed in Ali Mohammad Mohalla and police was deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, a young man was shot dead near Al Asif Square, Sohrab Goth in the precincts of Sohrab Goth police station. The identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained. He was going near Al Asif Square where unidentified men reached and open firing on him. Resultantly he received a bullet on his head and died on the spot. DSP Iftikhar Lodhi said victim appears to be Pashto-speaking and police did not found any thing from his possessions which provide help of his identity. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities and later moved to Edhi Morgue for identification. No case was registered till filing the report.
