APARTMENT LIVING, THROUGH THE EYES OF A SIX YEAR OLD.

We went to Dadi’s house this weekend.  It was lots of fun, I didn’t
want to go home ‘cause I really miss living with Dadi in her house.
We had to move ‘cause Phup-po had to move back ‘cause Phupa-jan is
always going on a big ship and she says she can’t stay alone for so
long, only I don’t get how she can stay alone with all those people in
Poupa Jan’s house. He has so many brothers and sisters, and a mom and
a dad and a whole bunch of children that belong to all the different
people in his house, Abba calls them Taliban in training and then Ammi
gives him a funny bulgy eyed stare.  Someday I think her eyes will pop
right out of her head ‘cause she does it a lot.  Anyway Cha-choo moved
out first ‘cause Chachi said she couldn’t stand “IT” anymore, I tried
to hang around to find out what “IT” was but Ammi gave me a bulgy eyed
stare and I ran ‘cause I really don’t want to see her with her eye
balls hanging out of her head, I think “IT” has something to do with
Phup-po’s kids.  She’s got four kids and they are all different sizes
and when they come to Dadi’s house they get to do whatever they want
and no one ever tells them “You guys better behave or else!”

We moved out after that, into a flat, only I don’t know why everyone
keeps calling it a flat ‘cause it’s not really flat at all.  I think
Phup-po should have moved into the flat instead of us ‘cause she’s the
one who can’t stay alone and there are sooooo many people here!
Kazillions of them!

There’s a family in the flat opposite ours, with a little girl just like me, her name is
Mahnoor.  She goes to a different school that’s really cool! Her mom
is always telling Ammi how great it is.  I wish I could go there, but
Ammi says my school is perfectly fine, and that I shouldn’t believe
everything people tell me.  Mahnoor said all the famous people’s kids
go to her school. Mahnoor has all this neat stuff her uncle sends her
from Dubai, but she never lets me play with her cool toys ‘cause her
mom says not to let anyone to touch things, else they get ruined.
‘Specially, by girls who haven’t seen things like that. Her mom talks
a lot! And no matter what she says, Ammi just nods her head and keeps
smiling one of those smiles that never reach her eyes. That’s how I
know she doesn’t think all that stuff Mahnoor’s mom keeps talking
about is all that interesting. Abba says Aunty is just a big “Choroo”,
how can she do all those things she’s bragging about if she sits at
our house the whole day yapping away.  Then Ammi gives him a bulgy
eyed stare and nods in my direction, Abba smiles a really goofy smile
and walks away scratching his head.  Sometimes I wonder if he has lice
‘cause he scratches his head a lot. Ammi rolls her eyes up and looks
at the ceiling, I suppose she just checks to make sure there are no
lizards.

Ammi has a “college friend” that lives on the ground floor.  Ammi says
Saima Aunty got married when she was still in college that’s why her
daughter is a lot older than me.  Anum baji is soooooo
beeeauuutiiiful!! She is so nice she lets me paint her nails with her
glittery nailpolish and she lets me dress myself up in her pretty
clothes. Whenever we go Saima Aunty always takes out a whole bunch of
yummy stuff and makes tang, then she and Ammi sit and talk and laugh
and whisper for a long time. I have a funny feeling they talk about
Mahnoor’s mom ‘cause Ammi makes funny faces and says all the same
things Mahnoor’s mom already told Ammi.  Anum baji is really BIG !
She’s almost a grown up but Ammi says not to be “soridiculous” she’s
only in class eight.  I r’member one day Anum baji came home
crying’cause the “lafungas” that live on the third floor threw water
balloons from their balcony at her.  The balloons were full of blue
ink and her clothes got spoiled, I think they looked kind of pretty
though.  “Lafungas” are the really big boys who live on the third and
fourth floors, Abba calls them that. Ammi says I cant call them that.
They have really greasy hair that sticks up in all directions.  They
are always standing around the parking area, some of them even smoke.
I think they are so big they don’t need to go to school anymore. So
they just stand around the whole time and talk ‘cause they don’t have
anything else to do.  Abba says what they do is called “lafungapun”
then Ammi gives him the bulgy eyed stare, Abba walks away scratching
his head and Ammi starts searching for lizards.

Ammi says its not so bad living here, if only people would take care
of the place rather than littering it.  There’s this really fat
uncle who lives upstairs somewhere who is always spitting red stuff on
the walls. I think he really likes red color and is trying to paint
the whole place red, I wonder if I should give him my paint brushes,
since he can’t ‘ford to buy his own.
